How to Refinish an Exterior Door

Giving your front door a facelift, is really giving the entire front exterior door of your house a facelift.

If that's what you are in need of, then here are a few simple tips to make your front door more welcoming.

The front door can really be considered the focal point of the exterior of your house. It's usaully draws the most attention, whether someone sees it at a distance, or they are standing on the front porch.

Start by choosing if you want to sand and stain the door, or prime and paint it. You will only want to purchase paint ot stain products that are made for exterior doors, that can stand up to harsh weather conditions.

If you choose to stain your door, you will need to start by sanding the surface, and apply the stain as instructed. If you decide to paint, then it would be best to prime it first.

You can paint the door to match exactly with the color of the house or shutters, but if you really want to make it stand out, paint it a color that contrasts nicely with the rest of the house. For instance, a door with a shade of red, would look nice with a house with neutral tones. Or, a black door would look nice with a grey or white house.

Give your door an added boost by either changing the hardware, or painting the hardware you already have. Use paints that are specially formulated for metals, such as Rustoleum paint.

Other ideas to make your front entrance more attractive are upgraded outside light fixtures, adding house numbers, or decorative name plates. Hang items such as baskets or wreaths for a nice touch. And, if you have a mailbox by your door, upgrade that too. I once bought a new mailbox to hang beside my door, and I was surprised at how much that improved the look of the door, and it was inexpensive!
